ALEXANDER McCALL SMITH

I have been a fan of this guy for years.  Just booked to work with him in Wisconsin for two days on his book tour in November.  I am a sucker for a man with charm, genteel old-world manners and a British accent.

MILWAUKEE LETS IT “ALMOST” ALL HANGOUT!

So, last night had dinner at the fabulous Onesto, sitting on their sidewalk patio when “dinner and a show” happened.  Hundreds of bicyclists in various shades of underwear rode past, hooting, cheering, laughing and entertaining every diner in every al fresco restaurant on Broadway in the Historic Third Ward.

DREAM BREAKER AT THE TRAINING FARM

Just ran across this photo from several years ago of one of our two year old colts in training for the racetrack at a lovely farm in Southern Virginia.  That’s Stephanie, the horse whisperer, known for working with young horses.  She has a training track including starting gates with bells and experienced riders so they know what to do!

EAGLE LAKE

Summer in Wisconsin is so lovely that people who live here don’t want to be anywhere else from June through August.  This is our summer lake retreat, Eagle’s Nest on Eagle Lake.  Clear cool water, sandy bottom and a swimming raft for lazing, looking at clouds (and bald eagles) and hearing the sounds of the loon family nearby.  Even when I’m not there it is my happy place.

THE ONE AND ONLY ADRIANA TRIGIANI!

Last night at the Wilson Performing Arts Center one of my all time favorite authors brought down the house with her larger than life personality, comic timing and hilarious story-telling.  She also signed hundreds of copies of her new book KISS CARLO.  If she comes to a town near you…go see her!adriana trigiani

DAVID SEDARIS IN THE HOUSE!

Sedaris is charming, thoughtful, curious and a man who needs clean clothes.  So, when I worked with him on his recent book tour in Milwaukee he asked if there was a laundromat near the bookstore.  I told him to bring his laundry and I would do it for him while he was doing some pre-signing.  His event was a sell-out and he was signing and chatting with fans from 4:30 pm-12:30 am.  Just one of the many things we literary escorts do for authors alone on book tour in a strange city.

CEDARBURG, WISCONSIN…WINTER FESTIVAL, FEBRUARY 18 & 19

One of my favorite events of the year is a classic, only-in-Wisconsin event.  Costumed Bed Races on Ice.  Competitors march down Washington Avenue during the Winter Festival Parade and end up at frozen Cedar Creek where they compete.  Five people to a bed – four pushers and one sitter.  Usually on skates but not required.  Best Costume gets a cash prize and 1st, 2nd, 3rd place race finishers get a trophy.  Thousands of festival attendees line the bank of the creek cheering on their favorite team.  This is what makes winter a bit more bearable!  February 18 & 19 this year.
